Statins Can Protect Against Alzheimer's Disease, According To New Study
High cholesterol levels are considered to be a risk factor not only for cardiovascular disease including stroke, but also for the development of Alzheimer"s disease. Therefore, many cholesterol lowering drugs, including statins, have been developed in recent years. In addition to the cholesterol reducing effect of statins Amalia Dolga, PhD, of the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, and her co-investigators have demonstrated that statins can protect nerve cells against damage which we know to occur in the brain of Alzheimer"s disease patients. The results are published in the June issue of the Journal of Alzheimer"s Disease.

Schering-Plough Announces Phase II And III Data For Corifollitropin Alfa
Schering-Plough Corp., (NYSE: SGP) announced results from the Phase III ENGAGE clinical trial demonstrating that a single injection of corifollitropin alfa, first in the class of sustained follicle stimulants, achieved similar efficacy to recombinant follicle stimulating hormone (rFSH) given once daily for seven days. The ENGAGE data was presented along with data from the Phase III ENSURE trial and the Phase II REALIZE trial at the 25th annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

DCP Comments On New Horizons - British Psychological Society

The British Psychological Society has welcomed the publication, of New Horizons, the government"s new plan for the development of mental health services. Dr John Hanna, director of the Policy Unit of the Society"s Division of Clinical Psychology says: "New Horizons promises to be the National Service Framework (NSF) - the next 10-year plan for mental health. "We welcome in particular its vision of fostering well-being rather than just treating mental ill health. We also welcome the use it makes of health economics and the developing evidence base about which treatments for mental health problems are most effective. "That evidence base shows that applied psychology has reached a position of parity with medicine, although that is not yet reflected in service delivery. We therefore disagree with the implication that the NSF has been fully implemented, particularly the NSF Standard 1 of preserving and enhancing mental will-being as well as preventing and detecting emergent psychological distress. "Nevertheless, we look forward to tangible policy proposals that, alongside effective commissioning and investment, will make New Horizon"s vision a reality."
