Bathtub Danger: Thousands Of Kids Injured Each Year In Slips And Falls
More than 43,000 children are injured in bathtubs and showers every year, mostly from slips and falls, according to the study, "Injuries Associated With Bathtubs and Showers Among Children in the United States." While bathtub injuries associated with tap water burns and submersions have generated much research, this is the first study using nationally representative data to look at injuries from slips and falls, which are responsible for the majority of bathtub injuries. Using data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission from 1990 to 2007, researchers evaluated an estimated 791,200 bathtub- and shower-related injuries during the 18-year study period among children 18 years old and younger who were treated in U.S. emergency departments.

Study Investigates DNA Of Sleep
A new study at the University of Leicester aims to investigate the DNA of sleep. The research in the renowned Department of Genetics at the University of Leicester is being carried out by Ms Mobina Khericha and Dr Eran Tauber. It represents a new approach to study the genetics of sleep. Using fruitflies as models the researchers aim at understanding the genetics of sleep and identifying genes involved in this process.

California-Based Desert AIDS Project To Hold Retreat Targeting Hispanics Living With HIV/AIDS
The Palm Springs, Calif.-based Desert AIDS Project next week will hold a health and wellness retreat targeting Hispanics living with HIV/AIDS, the Desert Sun reports. The program, called Grupo Latino, will provide individual and group activities -- such as depression and anxiety workshops, yoga and meditation -- for HIV-positive people. The program aims to help HIV-positive Hispanics and their families combat stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. In addition, DAP provides health care and social services for HIV-positive people. An estimated 5,000 to 7,000 people in California contract HIV annually. The state has one of the highest HIV rates nationwide, with more than 100,000 people living with the virus, according to the California Department of Public Health Office of AIDS (Brambila, Desert Sun, 5/27).

Health Protection 2009 Conference - Programme Announced

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced an innovative and wide-ranging programme for the Health Protection 2009 conference, which is taking place at Warwick University from 14th to 16th September. The conference programme focuses on the three key areas of the HPA"s work - preventing and controlling infectious diseases, protecting against radiation, chemical and environmental hazards; and preparing for potential and emerging threats to health - and features expert contributions from a number of public and private sector organisations involved in public health work. Justin McCracken, Chief Executive of the HPA, said, "The annual health protection conference is a leading event for those involved in public health and I"m delighted to be announcing a programme that offers such a wide range of presentations on issues that are at the heart of our work. "With such a diverse programme and with contributions from experts in such a variety of fields, the conference will be a great opportunity for health professionals and scientists to broaden their knowledge of issues that are at the forefront of health protection." Highlights of the four track programme include symposia on: - Responding to health emergencies (with presentations from experts at the HPA, Civil Contingencies Secretariat and the Office for Security & Counter Terrorism); - Sexually Transmitted Infections (featuring lectures from experts at the HPA, Health Protection Scotland, the National Chlamydia Screening Programme, the Scottish Consortium and St. George"s, University of London); - Protecting the health of healthcare workers (organised with Health Protection Scotland) Attendees of the conference will also have the opportunity to be briefed on the latest swine flu developments, from experts at the HPA, whose guidance for the government, health professionals and the public has been instrumental in shaping the country"s response to the current pandemic. Other highlights include a session on assessing and valuing health risks, with speakers from the HPA and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; and a session on translating science in to novel interventions, with input from Baxter Innovations. Professor Gordon Dougan, Head of Pathogen research and a member of the Board of Management - the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Cambridge, will give the Turnberg Lecture on Monday 16th September. His lecture will be on "selective evolution in microbial genomes; implications for infection control".
