Reducing Gasoline Emissions Will Benefit Human Health
President Barack Obama and Energy Secretary Steve Chu are consistent in their message that when it comes to transportation fuels, carbon-neutral biofuels as an alternative to gasoline are coming. While the focus of a shift from gasoline to biofuels has been on global warming, such a shift could also impact human health. A grant from the Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI) has produced a novel and comprehensive "Life Cycle Impact Assessment" to measure the benefits on human health that might result from a switch to biofuels. Although there are a number of uncertainties that must be addressed for a more accurate picture, these early results show that a biofuel eliminating even 10-percent of current gasoline pollutant emissions would have a substantial impact on human health in this country, especially in urban areas.

The Associated Press reports on lobbying around biotechnology legislation. A letter urging the protection of biotech drug makers from generics from "the private National Health Council, sent to House leaders drafting health overhaul legislation, said the plea was on behalf of "the more than 133 million Americans living with chronic diseases and disabilities and their family caregivers." It urged lawmakers to protect the makers of high-technology biological medicines against early competition from lower-cost generic copycats. The letter did not mention that nearly $1.2 million of the council"s $2.3 million budget in 2007 came from the pharmaceutical industry"s chief trade group and 16 companies that sell or are developing the brand-name biotech drugs."

RCN Responds To NHS Confederation Warning On The Downturn, UK

Commenting on the publication of the NHS Confederation report Dealing with the downturn: the greatest ever leadership challenge for the NHS, Dr Peter Carter, Chief Executive & General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), said: "This report paints a particularly bleak picture for the NHS over the next couple of years, which is deeply concerning. During a downturn, health can suffer and the NHS must be fit to deal with this. We are in total agreement with the NHS Confederation that cutting staffing levels and training would only exacerbate problems in an already stretched health service. "In times of financial difficulty, the need for stringent evaluation to ensure all spending offers genuine value for money, and that funding intended for patient care does not get siphoned off elsewhere, is even more important. "Our recent Freedom of Information request revealed that ÷£350 million pounds a year is spent on management consultants, of which over ÷£273 million was not related to direct patient care. This could account for more than 10% of the NHS savings expected by the Government. Every individual Trust needs to ask themselves if they need to take on a management consultant for certain tasks."
